Elenora Frances (Akers) Freeman

Elenora Frances (Akers) Freeman, 89, departed this life on May 21, 2018 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Elenora was born January 28, 1929 in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Nora (Howard) Akers and George A. Akers. She attended Lucy Addison High School, and then her first year of college at Howard University, in Washington, D.C., where she met her first love and husband, Earl M. Freeman, Jr. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Elenora enjoyed an excellent career in civil service with the U.S. Department of State’s Agency for International Development, ultimately serving as Chief of Procurement, retiring after 30 years of service. Elenora was a genuinely loving, caring person with a huge heart, and known by many as “Miss Personality.” This was first recognized in 1937 when, at age 8, she was noted by the local hometown newspaper as “the proudest and jauntiest drum major” in the Armistice Day parade. She loved the season of spring; gatherings with professional colleagues for challenging conversations about Washington politics; and hosting casual parties and July 4th barbeques with neighbors and friends.

Elenora is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Earl M. Freeman, Jr., a Navy Veteran, who proudly served his country in WWII and the Korean and Vietnam wars. Earl is affectionately known as her “Sissybum” (or, as the French say, “c’est bon” for this is good). Elenora is also survived by her loving daughter, Paula E’Laine (Freeman) Younger, and son-in-law, Victor B. Younger; her adored grandson, Cameron F. Younger; and a host of beloved family and friends in both the Virginia Beach, Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas.
