Gussie Belle Burnett, 78, accepted the Heavenly Call to eternal rest on August 6, 2018. She was born December 18, 1939 to the late Mary Davis and Fred Williams in Augusta, Georgia. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward “Eddie” Burnett; stepson, Jack Alston; two siblings, Bert Kelly and Jheri Davis and two grandchildren, Isaiah Burnett and Yvette Alston.
Gussie attend public schools in New York. She received her BA degree from Rutgers University in 1977 and her Master’s in Education from Jersey City State University in 1991.
Gussie met and fell in love with Eddie Burnett in 1964. They married in 1971 and from that union two children were born, Tiffany and Edward Jr. They were longtime residents of Newark, NJ until they retired and moved to Virginia Beach, VA in 2006.
Gussie retired after 18 years of service with the Newark board of Education where she began as a substitute teacher and became a librarian. She was a former member of Brown’s Chapel in Newark, NJ and Union Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, VA.
She leaves to cherish her memory, children, Tiffany Burnett and Edward Burnett, Jr., Lillie Alston, Leola Burnett and Ed Alston; grandchildren, Itamir, Jymir and Isaiah Burnett, Joycelyn (Derrick), Trisha (James), Gina, Raheem, Anisah, Trevor, Bill and Ayonnah and Shonte Smith; great-grandchildren, Ravi, Khaaliq, Tamirah, Jasmine, Justin, Jantae, Shakirah, Kayla, Davonte, Shariya, Tariq and Mekhi; great-great grandchildren, Taniya, Heavenly, Kori, Nasir, Jailah and Jair; god children, Renee Howell Derek Howell, Jr., Grace Kelly, Talnisha Smith and Tyrone Hart; special nephews, Curtis Burnett, Theodore Baker, Derek Howell, Sr. and Xavier Howell; and a host of other relatives and friends.
