Mary Hicks Obituary

God saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb.  So, he closed her weary eyes and whispered “Peace be Thine”; on Sunday January 26, 2020 at 4:40pm.

Mary M. Hicks affectionately known as “Sug or Grandma Sug” was the only child born to the late George and Annie Cooper Mitchell on May 5, 1925.  After moving to Princess Anne County, VA she joined First Lynnhaven Baptist Church and attended Princess Anne County Training School.

Sug married her love Levi James Wall, Sr. and to this union one son was born.  Shortly after his birth, her husband was killed during the war in Germany.  She was left to raise her son with the help of her mother.  Sug later met and married Albert L. Hicks, through this union she followed him in the military travelling all over the world.

Sug loved taking care of people.  Wherever she moved, her employment would be as a private duty nurse or nanny.  Sug loved the children she raised like her own and kept in contact with them as well.  She worked as a nurse up until her late seventies when her health begin fail.

Sug would give you the shirt off her back.  Always giving to the church, St Jude Hospital, the FOP and many other organizations.  She was a member of TOPS and Red Hat Society.  Sug loved to be a blessing to others in any form. Whether it was giving financially, socially or just her time she was always there for her family and friends.

Sug loved her family unconditionally and showed it every chance she could. She was always showing her love by buying us extravagant gifts like buying Zion his first mink coat.  Sug was a “LADY”: never loud always dressed from head to toe very poised and prissy, a “Girly Girl”, to the end.  Sug was always the life of the party and could throw one too. She loved to travel, dance, entertain, and make others laugh. When she lived in Atlantic Shores Seaside her favorite saying was always, “I don’t mean no harm, I just like to make people laugh and have fun.”

Left to cherish her legacy, a son Levi J. Wall Jr. and life mate Jeanette; two grandchildren, Sonya Smith and Levi Josh Wall; two great grandchildren, Zion Z. Smith and Adrion Wall; one first cousin, Clarissa H. Stone of Detroit, Michigan; one goddaughter, Emily Hickey of Seabrook, Maryland; a love sister, Kathy Malone of the Bronx, New York; special friends, Miss Sue, Bernice Forbes, Mr. Lamb, and many more relatives and friends.
