Nelda Ann Welle

Nelda Ann Welle, 70, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022.  Nelda was born in 1952 to Harvey and Geneva Hill, in Fort Collins, Colorado. She had a very successful career working for Mountain Bell beginning in May 1970 and retiring from that same company in September 2002.  During her many years of service she held multiple positions, but no matter where she was, she was well known for her work ethic and loved by her co-workers and friends there.  In 1972, she married Kenneth Welle in Broomfield, CO.  Nelda and Ken became proud parents at the birth of their daughter, Stefanie, in 1976.  While working, Nelda began to take college courses when she could and graduated with her Associate’s Degree from Front Range Community College in 1999. After retiring, Nelda worked part time jobs at a realty company and a landscaping company.  Her other part time job was baby-sitting her grandchildren, Breanna and Jordan.  

Nelda loved being involved in the community.  When Stefanie began to be involved in Marching Band in High School, Nelda jumped right in and volunteered.  She served three years on the Band Boosters board and made many lasting friendships while serving.  Years later, when her granddaughter, Breanna, also became involved in Marching Band, Nelda was there to lend a helping hand in any way that she could. In 2016, Nelda moved from her home state of Colorado to be near her daughter and family in Virginia Beach, VA.  She began attending Emmanuel Lutheran Church and became very involved with the church council there.  She enjoyed making new friends there and being a small group leader, Coordinator of the Greeters, and the Financial Secretary for the church.  

Nelda had a passion for sewing and quilting.  She was exceptionally good at making quilts that really catered to everyone’s interest, like a Star Wars quilt, or a Peacock quilt.  She loved to make things for others and many would ask her to make a specific item and she would search out the pattern so she could make it.  She also loved to read books, and was always up for playing games.  Her favorites were dominos and cribbage.  The thing she loved to do most of all though, was spend time with family and friends.

Nelda is predeceased by her parents Harvey and Geneva, her brother, Lawrence Hill, and her husband, Ken.  She is survived by her daughter, Stefanie (John) McGill, and grandchildren, Alicia Carter, Breanna McGill, and Jordan McGill.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law Kathy Hill, and nephews Kevin (Stephanie) Hill and David (Gabrielle) Hill and their children, Max, Beau, Lucy, and Baby Hill on the way, numerous cousins and friends, Aunt Irene and Aunt Carol.  

A public memorial service will be held on Friday, October 28th at 11am, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, located at 3900 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.  Nelda wished to be buried with her parents and there will be a small ceremony at Olinger Cemetery located at 10201 North Grant Street, Thornton, CO 80229, on Tuesday, November 22nd at 2:30pm.
